We’ve bagged ourselves an epic remix from the mighty Culprate in association with the brilliant Dubsaw Recordings. With massive remixes of tunes from the likes of Datsik and Koan Sound, we’ve heard some truly filthy tunes from Culprate recently, looking forward to hearing future productions from this fella. Please read the interview and enjoy the free tune! Thanks!

INTERVIEW:

NAME: John Hislop (Culprate)
AGE: 23
LOCATION: Watford… Yea i know….

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT CULPRATE THAT PEOPLE DON’T ALREADY KNOW:
Well… i started life as a squid… then one night i was out on the piss and woke up a person…

WE’VE HEARD A LOT OF YOUR TUNES, BUT WHAT HAVE YOU GOT BUBBLING AWAY IN THE LAB, SOON TO UNLEASH ON PEOPLE:
I’ve got a lot of material lined up.. Right now I’m focusing on my double album.. a whole plethora of different styles to come. From the obvious Dubstep bangers to, Ambient/Electronica/IDM/Techno/Triphop/Glitch/Breakcore.
Haha. I’ve been refining my style over the past few months, and I’m sure you’ll never hear anything like whats to come!!

TELL US ABOUT YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH DUBSAW RECORDS AND HOW THAT CAME ABOUT:
Dubsaw was the first label to show interest in my music. They have, in essence, helped me get to where I am today.
I first got in contact with Steve ‘Xzist’ back in early 2009. He simply hit me up and couldn’t get enough off my tunes. Once I was signed on with Dubsaw, Clint ‘Pkay’ worked as my “sort of” manager taking care of a lot of the busy work
and freeing me up to focus strictly on producing and djing. I have been exclusive to Dubsaw since April 2009 and hope to stay with them for a lot longer. Being with Dubsaw has introduced me to a lot of other like minded
artists like Brainpain, Point.Blank, KOAN Sound. everyone at Dubsaw are absolute legends!

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BEST PARTY/EVENT THAT YOU’VE PLAYED AT TO THIS DATE:
The best gig I’ve played would have to be Tensionstep 3 in Belgium. Was there with Doctor P, which was cool. Plus I got to meet up with Datsik, who I had worked with in the past but never had the chance to meet.
It wasn’t the biggest party ever, but the atmosphere was intense! Everyone there was either suffering from some sort of palsey or there was some premier bass face going on! Seriously thick vibe from everyone involved.

WHAT SET UP DO YOU USE IN THE STUDIO:
At the moment I have 3Gb Quadcore PC w 8Gb ram , Ableton live 8, and Reason 4
I have an MAudio Delta 1010 Really old but still really good. an Akai X7000, the same one that Omni Trio used for ‘Renegade snares’, a Sound Electronics T2.
Recently got some Dynaudio BM6a mk2 monitors, found my mixdowns have improved greatly since I got these. Also looking at getting a TL Audio M1-F tube tracker by the end of the year.

A lot of people want to know what plugins I use.. I use Pro 53, Kontact, Reaktor, Spectrasonics atmosphere and Trilogy, PsP vintage warmer. Waves plugs are some of my faves too.

HAVE YOU BEEN TRYING ANY NEW TECHNIQUES RECENTLY, IF SO WHAT:
Yes always trying something new. For example, right now theres one where I put a Lp filter on my master @ 100hz, (on bypass obviously..) and every so often I check just the sub frequencies of my tune.
Because in my opinion the cleanest part of an electronic tune should be under 100hz. This reduces needless rumble and if you get this section clear and punchy your overall mix will be miles better. I get a lot
of comments on how clean my tunes sound. This is an example of how I obtain that.

PLEASE TELL US ABOUT ANY FORTHCOMING RELEASES YOU HAVE AND ON WHICH LABEL AND HOW TO GET THEM:
I’ve got a remix of KOAN Sound’s ‘Jump Suit Adventures’ that should see release on Screwloose sometime in the near future.
As mentioned before, I am currently working on two full length albums. One will be the filthy, heavier dubstep I am known for.
And the other one will be.. lets say experimental.. Having a lot of fun with this one. Getting to cut loose as an artist. No boundaries.

CAN YOU SUM UP THE TRACK YOU ARE GIVING AWAY (THE SOUND/STYLE):
The track I’m giving out is my remix of Underworlds classic ‘Born Slippy’

In short i just wanted to revive the track.. it was such a massive success when it was 1st released. It’s one of those tunes the audience really gets into.
I would describe the style as No nonsense dubstep..I wanted to keep in as much of the original sounds as possible while staying original myself.
A lot of artists do too much on a remix or go way overboard. With a track as legendary as this you don’t want to butcher it.
So in that sense this track is equal parts paying homage to a classic, and expressing my own creativity.

ANY SHOUT OUTS:
My Family at Dubsaw: Pkay, Xzist, Brainpain, KOANSound, Point Blank. My agency Catalyst music group. Some of my partners in crime in the music scene: Dexcell, Gravity, Datsik, Fluxy, Zac @ ZAudio, Number Nin6, Fishman V Slug Nemisis, Current Value n Dean Rodell, Techdiff, and Sikth

And this is less of a shout, more a huge bigup… Jesus himself… Squarepusher!!
