All Out 28th Jan 2010

‘All Out’ Review

Well, HELLO SUBSPLASH! For anyone who doesn’t know this name, shame on you. Subsplash has swept around and onto the Brighton Dubstep scene like a typhoon, picking us up and pumping dirty bass and sick beats. Following the launch of their new site (www.subsplash.co.uk), they held an event at Digital to celebrate. ‘All Out’ had headliners such as Stenchman, Sukh Knight, Bar 9 & Jakes.
Walking through the doors of the club, I felt Sukh Knight kick the night off, bass-lines grinding through me and most of Brighton judging by the crowds! Making my way towards the bar, a feeling of frustration flooded through me, wanting that little bit more to hit me. So I headed upstairs to the bass tunnel and absorbed what an amazing night the Subsplash team had already put together. Being a huge Sukh Knight fan anyway, this was a perfect way start to the night. The audience lapped it up, bodies entwining and moving to the rhythm creating a strong pulse for the club that carried the night from then on.
Throughout the sets the club was shaken by the vocals of the dub-heads as they chanted the remixed version of a Dead Prez tune, changing the lyrics from ‘Hip, hop’ to ‘DUB, STEP’. The audience going nuts for it every time it was encouraged into a set. Well done to the MC’s, Envy and G Double for kicking off that audience participation, every time I heard that filthy bass drop I felt myself joining in with the hyped crowd as they bought Dead Prez back into to the dub scene.
Then Stenchman approached the stage and he did start his set extremely well, but I found that he used too many ‘rewinds’ and his transitions were too frequent. He would drop a pounding bass-line, and then he would change the song pretty much straight away. After a while, this became a slight annoyance because the tunes he was playing were sick to fuck, but why was there the need to change them every thirty seconds? Nice beats Stenchman, but relax on the scratches!
My favourite DJ’s had to be Jakes and Bar 9, both producing a killer set. Glued to their heavy bass-lines, smooth transitions and the pulse of the club moving me through their sets, going back upstairs during Jakes’ set and I let the raw bass grind through me so I could really ‘feel the music’. Bar 9’s set was the high point of my evening, being the masters of making unique and grimy beats to get the crowds going. Definitely a DJ to watch!
Subsplash showed that they are very capable of throwing a wicked night and launching their website as ‘All Out’ had such an infectious, positive vibe surrounding the whole evening, with messy bass and DJ’s who know how to prove their talents in a club! They’re next night is called ‘Dubstep Mayhem’ on Saturday 27th of Feb at The Volks in Brighton, if ‘All Out’ was anything to judge their events by, this night coming up is going to be just as good and would be a real shame to miss. Watch this space fools!
