Crikey! I was speaking with Mr Mark Instinct online just to say hello and he brought to my attention his recent release on Rottun Records had just come out! I felt so out of touch, ashamed, I had to whip my self with a mane of coarse horse hair and after I had stopped crying I gave Mark an interview! Make sure you check out the Get Loud EP right frickin’ now!
Interview:
NAME: Mark T Instinct
AGE: 24
LOCATION: Calgary, AB Canada
TO BE RELEASED ON ROTTUN RECORDS IS BIG! HOW DID IT COME ABOUT:
The release has kind of been in the works for a year or 2 now. I just got really bogged down with so many projects that i had done that i saved some of my favs for this EP. I have released one tune with Rottun it came out in july of 2009, it was called Invader
HOW HAVE YOU FELT THAT YOUR PRODUCTION HAS EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS TO THIS DAY:
I think a lot of that evolution came with the sound design portion of making electronic music. I have always been intrigued by the way sounds are made and sounds from older music. A lot of my inspiration for my music comes from other songs sometimes, could be the guitar riff and how its processed or a cool drum progression. With that kind of insight i have evolved my sound alot more as well as the “sounds” i use to get that. And with time it will just evolve more and more, its a never ending learning game.
WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT SET UP. ARE YOU STUDIO BASED OR IN THE BEDROOM:
I am all bedroom status lol. Right now im running off of a Mac Pro, i have it loaded to the tits with ram and processing so it is definitely a workhorse. Other than my computer I have a micro korg i use a lot for resampling and a vast array of software synths i use a fair bit.. oh and some krk rokit 8s lol
BETWEEN DJING AND PRODUCING, WHICH DO YOU GET THE MOST SATISFACTION OUT OF DOING:
I think both of them as a whole are very equal in the ratio of satisfaction lol. I like the fact that i can rock the hell out making tunes, and do the same thing playing tunes for a crowd, as well its a great opportunity to test out mixdowns and masters on club rigs. that’s a really good point of reference.
WHAT’S YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE CURRENT STATE OF DUBSTEP. FROM WHAT I’VE HEARD IT’S STILL TAKING THE STATES AND CANADA BY STORM. OVER IN THE UK THE GENRE IS GETTING A LITTLE CONFUSED WITH PRODUCERS MOVING ONTO DIFFERENT STYLES:
Well that’s the thing about a “genre” is that now it is classified as a whole with sub genres but the music itself seems to be formulating back to its roots of breaks, 2step and garage. Which in my mind seems natural for any musical collective. In north America it has a really aggressive sound. A lot of hip hop and rock characteristics, where as the united kingdom sounds more of 2 step or breaks.
IS THIS SHIT PAYING THE BILLS YET:
It’s enough to get by with but its not about cash flow for me its about accomplishment. Like I still work a job and whatnot, but i really dig the fact that i can do this stuff every day and still make ends. I feel lucky and really thankful that i am able to do what i love and have other people love it enough that i can go full force with it
GIVE US A FEW TIPS AS TO WHO YOUR ROCKING TO RIGHT NOW OR THINK WILL BE BIG IN 2011:
2011 seems to be a huge year for this sound i think people like Modestep will really break boundaries on the mainstream front and push the genre into new avenues. Bare will be another one to watch in 2011 as i presume he will make an even bigger paw print on the North American front. And i am really feeling “ADROA”. He is from Kelowna, BC and has some really sick stuff coming out on Rottun. Definitely an artist to watch
PLEASE LIST YOUR KNOWN FUTURE RELEASES, SO WE CAN KEEP A WATCH OUT FOR THEM:
