Requake are a dubstep trio from Belgium, just outside the city of Brussels. We have sent some interview questions over to them but it’s nearly been a week waiting so we’ve decided to post with out the it! If they do finally send it back, we’ll update the post with it. Overdose VIP is one of my favourite tunes recently with its wet flannel spluttering sounds and the subtle game sounds, its a stomping slap on your grinny mug! The other tune, Lack Of Rhythm that was given away by the boys a while ago, is a ‘back to the roots’ of dubstep tune, reminding us of the DMZ style of sub hunting dance floor stompers. TELL US HOW YOU GOT INTO PRODUCING DUBSTEP:
Seb: Well it began 1 years ago when my older brother showed me how he made some stuff in FL studio 5. He was just experimenting and trying to make some electro lol. I was fascinated how he could make his own beats, so I started to create my owns. First I tried to make Electro, House, Minimal, I experimented with a lot of electric genres, but 2 or 3 moths later, when I got into dubstep, I wanted to make it, I love it and I can’t stop making it!

BELGIUM HAS A LOT OF PROMISING PRODUCERS APPEARING AT THE MOMENT, TELL US ABOUT THE SCENE OVER THERE:
Adrien: I think the scene is pretty good over here. We got some sick producers like Point.Blank, Eptic, Dux, Science, Untiteld! crew, Stainage crew, etc… You probably already have heard of them.

Vincent: In larger cities ( Antwerp, Brugge , Gent, …) we have big venues like Untitled!, Bassix, Tensionstep,.. Allways leading with one of the biggest names in the dubstep scene! And I think the scene keeps growning here, because more and more Uk-artists come to Belgium and are interesting in the ‘Belgium dubstep scene’. Maybe because of a lot of dj’s say that Belgium have the best crowds (haha) !

LET US KNOW HOW YOU PRODUCE AND WHAT STUDIO SET UP YOU USE:
Seb: Nothing special. Software: I’m using Reason 4.0 but my first 4months I produced with FL studio until Dub Crookz told me Reason was the shit for making dubstep.
Hardware: I’m only using a computer and some pair of headphones, but Adrien got a nice little studio where we listen to our work-in-progress-tracks.

WITH YOU PRODUCTION, WHAT IS IT ULTIMATELY YOU ARE TRYING TO ACHIEVE:
Seb: Uhmm we just want to share our music, and show to people what we are making, and hoping that they like it! I try to make my tracks sound like I want it to… (but it’s never 100% what I really want).

WHO HAVE YOU HAD HELP FROM, PRODUCTION WISE AND LEARNING, IF ANY:
Seb: Well in the beginning Dub Crookz helped me a bit working with Reason, but after a few weeks I learned everything from myself . Ofcourse when I did some collaboration I learned a lot from other artists! And I think listening to dubstep is a big inspiration for me.

WHERE DO YOU HOPE YOU’LL BE IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS:
Vincent, Seb, Adrien: We don’t know, we hope to have fun and enjoying our sets at parties !

Seb: And we hope to be signed on some labels with who we have good conversations with atm.

HOW DID YOU GUYS MEET AND WHO HAS WHAT ROLES IN REQUAKE:
Adri: Not an easy story lol. To make it short: We know each other since we were 5years old, so we are really good friends. In 2008 Vincent and I started to Dj Drum and Bass as ‘Requake’. In 2009 when Sebastien started his productions he just joined us and also began to Dj, but he was more focused on dubstep. But now we really love to Dj dubstep too, so we dj dnb and dubstep aswell. And I try to help Sebastien with the productions, but mostly of the time it’s him alone that does the productions, and label stuff.

LOVE THE NAME, HOW DID YOU THINK OF IT:
Vincent: Haha thanks! In the beginning Adrien and I were searching for a good Dj-name. It was not easy, we had some ideas like: Mystical Instincts, Mystical Vibration, but then finally one day Adrien came up with ‘Requake’, and we both liked it. It’s difficult to explain the meaning behind it, but there is one lol!

ANY FORTHCOMING RELEASES YOU’D LIKE TO PLUG:
Seb: I will have some tracks forthcoming on Code Of Arms Records, But It’s still not 100% sure so I can’t really say which ones. And I also have a track forthcoming on Reika’s new label: Potent Records.
