It only seems like yesterday that we were helping celebrate with Liquid Stranger, him gaining a whooping 10,000 fans on his Facebook, and look where he’s at now…over 17,000 and a top slot in the Beatport charts for his new Album, The Arcane Terrain. THESE TUNES WERE RELEASED TO CELEBRATE LIQUID STRANGER REACHING 10,000 FANS ON HIS FACEBOOK!!!!

We have featured Liquid Stranger before on Squitty and were lucky enough to sneak an interview with him, and we ran a recent remix he did at the beginning of this month. With this being said, I could go into an overly analytical explanation of why we love the sounds of Liquid Stranger, but if he’s got the skills enough to have a Wikipedia page to explain him, i might as well let that do the talking:

“Martin Stääf (born 13 November 1978), aka Liquid Stranger, is a Swedish-born electronic musician, described by Generation Bass as ”the epitome of Transnational Dubstep covering everything from Latin, Asian, Eastern European and Jamaican Dancehall dubs.” Martin Stääf is known for his experimental approach to composition where he merges genres to create a unique style of music. Martin Woods of Chillbase describes Liquid Stranger’s music as a “unique blend of Ambience, Big Band Jazz, Dubstep and Psychedelica drizzled over electronic Dub Reggae grooves.” Martin Stääf is currently living in Scottsdale, Arizona.

He launched the Liquid Stranger project in 2003. His intention was to have one alias that would encompass all his musical output. Consequently, he has produced a wide variety of music under the name Liquid Stranger. At first, Stääf’s plan was to keep his identity a secret. He never did interviews or showed his face on stage. Stääf states: ”After a while it became quite tricky. in fact, Interchill finally ruined this idea by writing my name on the record sleeves.” Liquid Stranger’s creative output ranges from suggestive Ambient soundscapes to movie scores, pop, dub, infernalia, drill n bass, and electronica.

The first release under the name Liquid Stranger was the song Environmental Meltdown, featured on the compilation Global Psychedelic Chill Out – Compilation Vol. 4 by Spirit Zone Recordings.
When asked in an interview why he moved away from the trance scene, Stääf replied: ”I never really switched per se, I have always made tons of different types of music. During the time I toured with Necton, I produced various stuff like Ambient, Electro and Drill n bass. What excites me is the fusing of genres. I have no fixed style that I stay with too long, I do not like boundaries”.

Destroy All Concepts, What is that i hear you say? Well, from their self described profile:

I don’t know about you, but im feeling that logic and look forward to hearing more from them. The reason were posting on this is because a good friend of our here at Squitty, Liquid Stranger, has his own remix of the Dub Gabriel feat. MC Zulu track, and it’s as big and hairy as a Yeti’s mother. We have featured his filthy take on sound, on Squitty before and we have to say we have never been let down by him.

Enough of me, lets get our proverbial Dubstep nashers well and truly into this filth. There are 10 other remixes of the Dub Gabriel feat. MC Zulu track and im not going to make life too hard by saying, it’s your turn, go out and sniff them out, enjoy the discoveries of musical madness. Destroy All Concepts have all sorts of goodies on their site, you’d be a fucking fool to miss them.

Who doesn’t know about Liquid Stranger? You bloody well should! This bright young producer, Swedish-born, has an amazing story behind him. Currently living in Scottsdale, Arizona, Liquid Stranger has a huge range of musical talents and achievements under his belt. From producing a song for the Euro-Vision to Psychedelic Trance, Liquid Stranger has sought far and wide for his current sounds in his productions. This tune he is giving out for free has an Bollywood/Arabian sound to it, to be honest I’m not sure I can describe it correctly! Go find more of his tunes as many of them are bangers. Although the sounds may not be the filthiest, the production is tight and justifies plays in any set! Interview with Liquid Stranger coming later today or tomorrow…

NAME: Liquid Stranger
LOCATION: Scottsdale, AZ

COULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND/STYLE OF YOUR PRODUCTIONS:
Throughout the years, I have been meddling around with all kinds of music, ranging from ambient to drill n’ bass. The last
few years I have been mainly focused on dub music. I like dub due to its open frame. There are very few limitations since
it is basically more a way of manipulating sounds then a genre in itself. To me, Dubstep is the ultimate dance music, and I love the mix of gnarly whale noises and high doses of humor.

HOW DID YOU FIRST DISCOVER BASS MUSIC AND WHAT ARE YOUR EARLY MEMORIES OF
THE SCENE:
I grew up with the music of Data, Kraftwerk, Mike Oldfield, and Jean Michel Jarre. These are my first memories of music
that really spoke to me. I got into the Rave scene in 88, and was exposed to massive amounts of acid house, techno, and
jungle music. To put it shortly, I have been a victim of bass for most part of my life

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR PROCESS WHEN PRODUCING:
It is a no-control battle. Inspiration hits, and something happens. I have found that the more I learn to silence my ego,
stand back, and fully surrender to the creative process, the better the result will be. I tend to work really fast, simply because I have to. I do not have the discipline to sit for more than 5 hours with one song. I get bored very easily,
so I just have to move forward.

WHERE, IF ANY, DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION OR IDEAS FOR TUNES:
It could literally be anything. I get a lot of inspiration from movies (especially bad ones it seems), and things that happens during the day. Other people’s music is also an inspiration of course, but I have lost interest in digging in the crates, so consequently I am very badly updated with new music and producers. The biggest influence for me music wise is, without a shadow of a doubt, vintage computer games. During my childhood, I spent so much time listening to the soundtrack of the C64 games, and I consider Chris Huelsbeck and Rob Hubbard to be true geniuses of the modern age.

WHICH PRODUCERS ARE YOU IMPRESSED WITH THESE DAYS:
I like producers who are original, and who’s character shines through in their music. Nuff said.

DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS TO EVOLVE YOUR SOUND/PRODUCTION IN THE FUTURE:
…yes, I always tend to come up with far too many plans for new projects, but again, it is beyond my control. The worst
songs I have ever made are results of to much rigid planning.

WHATS THE BEST CROWD YOU HAVE PLAYED OUT TO:
Well, back in the old wild techno days, I played a whole bunch of amazing festivals, such as Voov Experience, and Boom.
Lately, I have mostly played in clubs, and while it does not really compare well to the massive outdoor vibe I have to say that the US has a really good Bass culture in general.

Just a remix I did for fun for the friction Lab show on BBC…but I do wonder what Dhaaru Pee Ke means.
