COMPETITION TIME!

Right, this is a first for us, and its not our usual bag of tricks, but, we have been all around the UK listening to dubstep for a long long time and we know a thing or two about what gets played and what makes peoples hearts tick. Well, inside the dark sweaty places that reside in the cities around England, there are nights that take place, where people congregate to listen to a selective choice of loud noises, and MC’s that can devastate mic’s. Deep in South London, Grime MC, N.A.A member and originator of the #Pain hash tag on twitter Big Narstie, has dropped the official video to the Grime banger Gas Leak.

Now, what im getting to is this. We have noticed the significant rise in Grime interest in Dubstep in the UK, and we feel that it may be spreading to the far corners of the world. So what we want to do is test your compositional abilities and see if you can remix the acapella of this Grime track. We have a download of it HERE for you to take, and we want to see who can make the best dubstep remix of this track. Not a hard request, but we are really interested in seeing the outcome of this event. And, the best one (Picked by us at Squitty) will be featured on Big Narstie’s next project release!

Being from the dubstep side of life, i don’t know massive amounts of stuff about Grime. But an old friend of mine who runs Grime Forum, is the be all and end all of Grime Blogging, Reporting, Documenting, what ever you want to call it, he informs and educates the masses on the activities in the Grime world. Without him, there wouldn’t be a location to network the filthy goings on in the Grime community. In his latest sonic excursion we see PROPATINGZ expanding on the success of last releases and pushing the boundaries of his chosen genre. “TRAP” challenges the definitions of dubstep by combining elements of Glitch, Indie Rock and live performance whilst still delivering peak hour dubstep mayhem. Propa’s vocal delivery here is reminiscent of Oasis or Blur and thematic synth stabs call to mind Pendulums recent efforts. However the presence of thick gutteral low-end will keep the dubstep aficionados satisfied and the mosh pits at full tilt.

The B side offers a surprise in store for those more familiar with Propa’s production as he goes deeper. With “Last Request” Propa again takes the vocal lead in a much more seductive affair. Rich, full and textural basslines lay the foundation whilst Propa breatherly enunciates over top. Cinematic chords and tribal samples call to mind the darker atmospherics of Massive Attack and illustrate that Propa’s skills lye not only in the dubstep rave but also in a deeper musical sensibility.

Reign & King Astma

Reign and King Astma are known well for their many collaborations, possibly they are dutch lovers?! Well I’m sure they are safe guys and I don’t mean to make out that they are gay for each other! Anyway! We have a sick Jelly remix from the boys, the original of course by Vaski. Also a lively tune from Reign called Hyperspace Gate. I’ve added Reigns bio below so you get more information if you ever bother to read this shit! Peace.

Reign Bio:
Reign is the dubstep alias of 20 year old producer Reinald Van Praet, hailing from Leuven – Belgium. Producing for about 3 years and though fairly new to the dubstep scene, he’s already gaining quite some fans and interest around town.

Coming from a metal/rock background, you can tell that his style of dubstep often reaches back to these genres, aswell as alot of breaks and drum&bass influences. Hard hitting basslines with pounding drumbreaks and a critical ear for detail: Reign’s recipe for a unique sound of dubstep.

Reign and King Astma have recently had a release on 2 Much Bass Records, entitled Brainfever, which is nice, so go and get that!

Robokop

Robokop has been on our radar for a while now, probably because he’s made of stainless steel, which is what his tunes sound like!Wish I could write more about this release as it is huge, but I must get back to my day job!! Bio below…

Robokop is a dubstep/hiphop producer from Hilversum in The Netherlands.

His fascination for different styles of music started when he was 6 years old, listening to rock’n’roll, reggea and old hiphop songs.
At the age of 12 he started beatboxing under the name Yoshi J. and developed an extreme love for breaks and beats.
Influenced by the east coast hiphop scene, (soul/jazz) sampled beats.

In 2006 he started producing with a friend. They were making humoristic hiphop songs and learned to create the beats he always wanted to make.
With De Verse Irritatie, he created a base for himself.

In 2007 he started to work with his old punk band drummer Distrikt, who also was producing hiphop beats.
At that time Robokop was really into the dnb/hiphop scene, and combined that interest in makin loud heavy hiphop beats.

In 2009 Robokop started a hiphop/dubstep movement with Distrikt, Breek and Olaf called Centrum.

Although he is still busy with the Centrum movement, Robokop picked up the dubstep genre and started to give his own unique twist to his songs.
Trying to combine as many music styles and make tunes as epic as possible.

After chatting with Oblivion from USA we had to upload the tunes and previews to our file sharing, find and edit a photo to feature, edit down the interview, write this up and wait to press the Publish button! We agreed with Oblivion that once his Soundcloud Page had hit 500 Followers that we would publish this post an exclusive free download of Oblivion remix of Vaski – Jelly! INTERVIEW:

NAME: James Vadner
AGE: 21
LOCATION: Minneapolis, Minnesota

FOR THOSE WHO MIGHT NOT BE FAMILIAR WITH YOUR SOUND/STYLE. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE IT:
I guess my sound could be described as heavey basslines a real electro style to it, I do try to keep things different as each tune gets done, I am also working on a tune that is super chill and deep.
I am also recently working on a new tune that is chill and deep, with a lot of sub bass.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO DUBSTEP, AND WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO PRODUCE:
Awesome question, In 2008, I was booked to play at this campout like 2 hours south of Mpls, funny story this is the same exact way Alex Vaski got into dubstep as well, we were both there walking around from stage to stage, and seemed to keep ourselves at the Uncensored US stage.
our 2 friends KJ, and Dan Hack were playing dubstep and we heard the track Gangster by Babylon System & SPL, after that we both pretty much just fell in love with the genre, before we left we were also handed a dubstep mix by a DJ named Tinhead, and listened to that the whole way home.

After a few months I started buying tunes and playing them out, and moved from being a UK Hardcore DJ to a Dubstep DJ, at times I wanted to do both, but I kept only being booked for dubstep, in 2010 Alex (Vaski) and I started a collab called Party Foul, and that pretty much started me with producing my own dubstep, as of today I have been producing for about 9 Months.

WHATS YOUR CURRENT PRODUCTION SET UP:
FL Studio 9, a computer, and some crappy Philips brand speakers from a cd changer stereo, I also have a 12 inch sub that helps alot, yea its not much but it works for what I am pushing out now, soon I hope to get a nice midi keyboard, and some new monitors.

HOW DO YOU FEEL THE SCENE IS GOING, IS THERE ANYTHING MISSING, HOW WOULD YOU CHANGE IT:
Dubstep its self has really pushed itself into everything, there are producers like Rusko, Chase & Status producing for big acts like Rihanna, and Brittany Spears, at my age we remember Britney with pop music singing oops I did it again, and now she has a tune with a dubstep breakdown.

So really I think the scene is doing just great, people maybe mad that its going mainstream, but when it wasn’t I remember when people talked about wanting to make dubstep big, now it is, get used to it haha.

My thoughts on what is missing, nothing really anymore at a time when dubstep first blew up, that’s all that people wanted to hear, they would go to a rave just to hear it, I love all sorts of electronic music, and I love to keep seeing parties with all styles instead of just dubstep, and that’s would also I would change, to keep it fresh and keep peoples minds open, so usually in a set of mine you’ll never hear just a full hour of dubstep, you’ll hear some dutch house, dnb, hardcore, what ever i feel the crowd at the time will like.

LET US KNOW ABOUT YOUR FORTHCOMINGS, WHEN AND WHO WITH:
New EP releasing on Betamorph Recordings, no really set date yet, but will have some really sweet tunes, like Bomberman Fights Back, and Forcefeild, also a remix in the works by Cyberoptics, my ep will have a couple more tunes, but really don’t have any names for them yet.

Skets On Ket

This is the first time we have posted on Skets On Ket, but not the first time we’ve heard from him! It’s great to see such an enthusiastic producer keep hitting on us with his new tunes, granted that his earlier works were pretty sketch, but with a name like that, you’d expect a bit of a rocky road with perfecting his sound! All joking aside, what we have here to give out is a pretty dirty remix! He’s been racking up his fans and now the demand overwhelming! You wanted it, you got it!

The tune is a remix, which I don’t really care much of hearing the original version, but this Dubsteppery version is gutty and quacky!
